Pressure Alteration testing has many different names. It's known as Pressure Cycle testing, Impulse testing, Pressure Pulsation testing, Pressure Fatigue Test, Pressure Fluctuation testing, or Pressure Load Change testing. The following post will briefly describe the process of a pressure alteration test and its unique propositions to test pressure vessels' design life, tightness, and mechanical strength of a component.

What is a Pressure Alteration Test?

At Poppe + Potthoff Maschinenbau GmbH, a global leader in pressure testing technology, we define a pressure pulsation test as a test that simulates the load of the component due to fluctuations in the test media pressure. A test medium can be any fluid such as water, glycol, ethylene, test oil (e.g. E12), oils, and in some cases air or specific gases. The test is intended to verify the fatigue strength, mechanical strength, and tightness of a component/pressure vessel exposed to pressure fluctuations in the vessel. 

The above graph shows an example by displaying the varying pressure loads within the component and visualized in a sine (wave) curve. Pressure alteration tests are frequently combined with ambient temperature control and/or media cooling and heating. Therefore the definition can be expanded by the following. In addition to monitoring the behavior during the fluctuating pressure, the condition of the component during cooling and heating the ambient temperature through a climate chamber, and/or heated and cooled media can be monitored and analyzed.
